Proxy Settings for Motorola V710 and E815

This article describes the procedure for configuring the Motorola V710 or E815 to use a proxy server of your choosing.

The instructions that follow refer to the "Menu" key on the phone. As many folks don't seem to know which key this is, it is the middle key on the top row of keys (the one with 4 little horizontal lines on it).

Steps:

First you need to get into the Web Sessions menu. How you do this depends on the firmware your phone has.

First we'll try the simple way:

  • Press the Menu key
  • Choose "Mobile Web" (or similar item)
  • Choose "Web Sessions" (if you don't have this, skip down to the hard way)

If that didn't work, we'll go the hard way:

  • Press the Menu key
  • Quickly type 073887*
  • You should be prompted for your 6-digit security code. It is 000000 unless you've changed it.
  • You should now be in the "Programming Menu" and "Web Sessions" should be one of your choices.

You should now be in your Web Sessions menu. Chances are you'll have one entry that your carrier put in the phone and there will probably be a little padlock by it. You should also have a choice that says "[New Entry]". Select the [New Entry] choice and then complete each item in the "Entry Details" screen as follows:

  1. Name: Make something up. Call it HoTTProxy if you like, or MyProxy, or whatever you want - it doesn't matter.

  2. Homepage: You may or may not be able to edit this item depending upon your carrier and firmware. If you can edit it go ahead and put in the URL (include the http:// and be sure you don't enter Http://). If you can't edit it, and it is set to something stupid like http://homepage, don't worry about it - if you're using HoTTProxy as your proxy server you can set your preferred homepage in the proxy server and it will handle it for you.

  3. User ID: Enter your assigned UserID for your proxy server. It may or may not be case sensitive, so enter it the same way it was provided to you.

  4. Password: Enter your password for the proxy server. This almost certainly is case sensitive.

  5. Gateway IP 1: Enter the IP address of the proxy server. Note that if your proxy server has a dynamic IP address, and if you have a DNS name that points to your proxy, you can leave this blank and use Gateway 1 instead of Gateway IP 1. The important part is that you one or the other, but not both. Also, if you are running your own proxy server, be sure that the IP address you are using is the "real" IP address and not some local, non-routable, NAT address. Explaining briefly, if your proxy machine is behind a broadband router then it almost certainly has been assigned a non-routable IP address. To find out the real IP, from the proxy machine itself, go to www.ipchicken.com and it will tell you your IP.

  6. Gateway 1: If you filled in Gateway IP 1 then leave this entry blank. You should use one or the other, but not both. In this entry you can put the DNS name of your proxy server instead of using an IP address. As mentioned above, you might do this if your proxy server has a dynamic IP address and you're using dynamic DNS to point a DNS name to it. If your proxy has a dynamic IP and you don't use some sort of DynDNS, then you'll have to edit the IP address in your phone every time your machine's IP changes (yuck). You do not put any 'http://', etc. in this entry, just the DNS name (e.g. example.dyndns.org).

  7. Service Type 1: HTTP

  8. Port 1: 9201 (or whatever port your proxy server listens on)

  9. E2E Port 1: (Same as Port 1)

  10. LXL Port 1: (Same as Port 1)

  11. Domain 1: (Leave blank)

  12. You can leave Gateway IP 2, Gateway 2, Service Type 2, Port 2, E2E Port 2, LXL Port 2, and Domain 2 at their default values unless you have a second proxy server that you wish to set up as an alternate.

  13. Cache Start-Up: There may be some debate about this, but I recommend changing this to "Off (Retrieve" as these phones seem much more prone to getting whacked out if you have caching turned on.

Double check your entries and make sure they are all right and then choose "Done" (the left soft key).

Now, press the 'Menu' key (with your new entry highlighted) and choose "Set Default" to make the new entry your default.

If your proxy server is up and running, and you've done everything right, when you launch Mobile Web you should go to your home page. If you get any sort of error you either entered something wrong or your proxy isn't up or your homepage isn't reachable.
